Description

For the slight edge to work, you have to do something, and keep doing it until you succeed. You need to follow the Plant-Cultivate-Harvest cycle . However, many people either expect something from nothing, or they want to go directly from plant to harvest. The Slight Edge is constantly at work; once you make a firm decision to step onto the upper curve and consistently apply the 7 Slight Edge principles, you can turn any area of your life around in a few years. In fact, genuine success in any one area of your life tends to spread to other areas. That’s the choice you face every day, every hour: A simple, positive action, repeated over time. A simple error in judgment, repeated over time. To get started, simply start by doing one daily discipline in each of these 5 areas. Review these factors daily, model successful people, and spend quality time with people who have achieved similar goals and dreams.

That’s the only reason our lives follow that roller coaster. It’s that simple. As soon as we get away from failure and up past the line of survival, we quit doing the things that got us there. You know what that means? It means you already know how to do everything it takes to make you an outrageous success. That’s how you’ve survived up to this point. And if you can survive, then you can succeed.Look at them daily: You should look at the list of goals every day—either right when you wake up or right before bed—and ask yourself if you’ve done anything toward those goals that day. If not, why not? What could you do differently tomorrow?

Book Summary: The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson - Habitgrowth Book Summary: The Slight Edge by Jeff Olson - Habitgrowth

If you read my summary, you really don’t need to read the book. Despite the audiobook not being very long (~3 hours), it was still too long as the ideas aren’t all that original. There’s material in the book from Jim Rohn (what’s easy to do is easy not to do). The concept the author espouses is covered in Darren Hardy’s book “ The Compound Effect.” Darren made the same exact claim Jeff makes in the Slight Edge. Bottom line, there’s nothing really new here, but as it is with many self-help books, maybe this book contains the example or story that flips the switch for you and actually gets you to act on the thing you know you should do. Earlier in this book you walked through a brief exercise where you assessed your life as being on the success curve or failure curve in these seven specific areas. Now let’s revisit them, only this time I’m going to ask you to make a simple roadmap for each one, consisting of three elements: The Superachiever That semester, for the first time in my life, I got straight A’s. I went on to business school and graduated at the very top of my class. Fresh out of college, I Beyond simply being a useful way to keep yourself inspired on your path to success, putting your vision and goals on paper has other neurological benefits:It’s the Little Things That Matter As an actress living in New York, it is so easy to get overwhelmed by everything that comes with this competitive business. The Slight Edge helped me to understand that the small choices I make every moment of every day make a huge impact on my life. Living in a society with so much emphasis on success, I found that The Slight Edge redefined what success is for me. It helps me to take the next step forward in my everyday life and do the next right thing. I know those steps will ultimately lead to a very successful and fulfilling life. Essential Points from Chapter 12 The wisest investment you can make is to invest in your own continuous learning and development. Learning by studying and learning by doing—book smarts and street smarts—are the two essential pistons of the engine of learning. On the path to a goal you will be off-course most of the time. Which means the only way to reach a goal is through constant and continuous course correction. Most of your life—99.99 percent—is made up of things you do an automatic pilot. Which means it’s essential that you take charge of your automatic pilot’s training Momentum The Water Hyacinth The water hyacinth is a beautiful, delicate-looking little plant. Prized as an ornament, it sports six-petaled flowers ranging from a lovely purplish blue, to lavender, to pink. You can find it floating on the surface of ponds in warm climates around the world. The water hyacinth is also one of the most productive plants on earth; its reproductive rate astonishes botanists and ecologists. Although a single plant can produce as many as 5,000 seeds, the method it prefers for colonizing a new area is to grow by doubling itself, sending out short runner stems that become “daughter plants.” If a pond’s surface is fairly still and undisturbed, the water hyacinth may cover the entire pond in thirty days. On the first day, you won’t even notice it. In fact, for the first few weeks you will have to search very hard to find it. On day 15, it will cover perhaps a single square foot of the pond’s surface ... a barely significant dollop of color dotting the expanse of placid green. On the twentieth day (two-thirds of the way to the end of the month), you may happen to notice a dense little patch of floating foliage, about the size of a small mattress. You would be easily forgiven if you mistook it for a boy’s inflatable life raft, left behind during a family picnic. On day 29, one-half of the pond’s surface will be open water. On the thirtieth day, the entire pond will be covered by a blanket of water hyacinth. You will not see any water at all. Is the number of friends in your life, meaningful exchanges with people, mutually enriching events growing each year? We are all capable of being winners in life. And yes that includes you. Because the slight edge is always working. Working for you or against you. It is working now and always will be.
